ASTROLOGY AND BELIEF
It always kind of gets me when people ask “Do you believe in astrology?” This may sound like a radical statement to someone who has never studied astrology, but the question always strikes me as similar to asking “Do you believe in the weather?” Or perhaps more accurately, “Do believe in this map of your town?”
Astrology is not a matter of belief, any more than noticing the shape of a triangle is a matter of belief, or noting that Autumn follows Summer is a matter of belief. The gratifiying thing about astrology is that you don't have to take any of it “on faith”. You can, with each new person you meet, consider for yourself whether these patterns are relevant. Does this person seem to have things in common with their sign? If not, why might that be? If yes, then do they also have anything in common with the other people you know of that sign? If not, which sign do they seem more like? This is a never-ending source of inquiry for my mind.
Allow me to put it another way. When I attended my first real astrology class (in a classroom! With desks! And homework!) it really surprised me to hear our teacher start a conversation about Lisa Simpson (the character on the animated show The Simpsons) being an Aquarian. It never occurred to me to look outside real-life people to see these patterns. But once I opened my mind to the idea, I found it really satifying and fun! Once you get familiar with these stories/archtypes/characters, you can see them all over, in literature, in movies, in television shows, in your pets. I've had really lively discussions with people about what characters are which signs on certain shows. For instance, one of my favorites is Dwight Schrute on the Office. He is such an extreme portrayal of Scorpio as to be totally ridiculous. And especially since I am a Scorp, I love it! I still haven't decided about Steve Carrell's character Michael Scott. He's definitely a Cardinal sign. He often talks a lot about his office being a family, so in that sense I get a definite Cancer vibe from him. But, his vanity, obliviousness, and constant obsession with finding a partner to love him makes me think Libra (no offense Libras!). My ultimate guess would be a Libra sun with Cancer rising.
So to get back to my original point, how can I believe in the astrology of a character on TV? This character isn't even real, so they obviously don't have a birth date, so how can I go on to discuss what sign they would be? Questions like these stem from a fundamental flaw in the way some people think about astrology. Granted, it's confusing. It does not fit into how we have come to view the universe, in terms of linear cause and effect. It is based on an observable natural phenomenon, but it is not bound by it. It is not a science, but niether is it a matter of religious belief, any more than adjectives are a matter of religious belief.
In the end, I think these questions are attempting to get at the real mysterey people want answered about astrology: How does it work? Or rather, WHY does it work? I have, over the years, come to my own conclusions about that, and I encourage anyone interested in the matter to do likewise. But I have to say that MY answer to those questions would not satisfy a science-minded individual. Because there are certain phenomenon that we don't have a scientific way of explaining, that never the less exist. We still don't know why leaves change color in the fall, but we can all agree that they do.
So I guess my real answer to that question “Do you believe in astrology?” is this: “I don't have to believe in astrology, because I study it.”
What's your take?
